Samuel M. Shirey, 89, of Southern Pines, North Carolina and New Castle, PA, passed away March 18, 2018 at his residence in Southern Pines. Born October 21, 1928 in North East, PA, he was the son of Samuel and Elsie Pearl (Phanco) Shirey. He was preceded in death on December 4, 2015 by his loving wife of 59 years, Helen Myra (Suter) Shirey, whom he married September 15, 1956. After his high school graduation, Sam served in the U.S. Army in Japan. He then attended Ohio University and participated in the Airforce ROTC program. Mr. Shirey was a Certified Public Accountant as a partner in Hill, Barth & King in New Castle where he retired in 1985 and worked a number of business ventures including WBZY Radio 1200. Sam was a member of Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church in New Castle and Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst, NC. He was a past Treasurer at the New Castle Country Club, a Past Master Mason, 32 degree Mason, Walmo Lion and past Treasurer at the Pennsylvania Club where he enjoyed fishing with family and friends in Canada each year. He was an avid golfer all his life which morphed in his later years to lawn bowling and listening to bluegrass With seven older sisters, Sam was an Uncle the day he was born and relished his role as Uncle Sam with his multitude of nieces and nephews, who adored him as the last of his generation. Sam got along with virtually everyone he ever met stating that if you were going to have any friends, you had to let everyone have one major fault. He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Betsy and Charles Lucky of New Castle and Linda and Jim Colleran of Newport Coast, CA; one son and his wife, Paul M. and Roberta Ann Shirey of Midland, PA; and four grandchildren. In addition to his parents, seven sisters and his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Samuel M. Shirey, Jr. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 24, from 12:00-3:00p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation Saturday at 3:00 at the funeral home with Dr. David Watson officiating. Burial will be in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
