Sandra J. "Sandy" Johnston, 72, of Old Pittsburgh Road, New Castle, passed away the night of September 7, 2015 at UPMC Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh. Born December 8, 1942 in New Castle, she was a daughter of Harold and Ethel Marie Daily Kline. Surviving at home is her husband of 53 years, Hartley C. Johnston, Sr., whom she married June 23, 1962. Sandy was a 1960 graduate of Shenango High School. She was employed as a cashier for both Warehouse Sales and Kirk Hutton Hardware in New Castle. In addition, she was the owner of Valley View Motor Home Rental and was a secretary for the Boy Scouts of America. A former member of Eastern Star, she had many hobbies including cooking, quilt making, needlepoint and crocheting. Sandy also enjoyed traveling and playing piano. She was a former member of Hoover Heights C&MA Church and West Pittsburg Methodist Church where she and her husband Hartley were married. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Hartley C. Johnston, Jr. of New Castle; one sister, Karen F. (Richard) Knight of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one niece, Rachelle Knight. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will take place on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Llewellyn officiating.
