Sherry Riell Chessin, of New Castle, passed away the morning of Wednesday, May 8, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 4, 1952, in Erie, PA, Sherry was a daughter of Martin and Rosalie Riell. She was a member of Rodef Sholom Synagogue in Youngstown, Ohio and Temple Tifereth Israel in New Castle. She was employed for over 23 years at the Human Services Center as a case worker and managed care coordinator. She took pride in knowing that her work helped others improve their quality of life. Previously, she was employed as a physician's receptionist and as an assistant manager of a retail shop. Sherry was a 1970 graduate of Academy High School in Erie, PA, and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1974. She was a founding board member of the Children's Advocacy Center and a founding board member of Promises for Pets, which she named. She was a member of the Lawrence County Task Force on Child Abuse/Partners in Prevention, a board member of Temple Hadar Israel, a former Girl Scout troop leader and a Jameson Health System volunteer. Sherry loved travel, photography, reading and fashion, but most of all she treasured the times spent with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Neil Chessin, and their two daughters, Dayna Leigh Chessin and Andrea Beth Chessin, both of Columbus, Ohio; her parents, Martin and Rosalie Riell of Aventura, Florida; her sister, Alisa Silverman of Brockway, PA; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Debby and Jerry Yarov, of Columbus, OH; two nephews; one niece; and two great nieces. Sherry was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents, as well as her in-laws. Visitation will be held Friday from 9:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A service will follow immediately at 11:00 at the funeral home and will be officiated by Rabbi Frank Mueller of Rodef Sholom Synagogue. Burial will follow the service at Tod Cemetery in Youngstown, Ohio.
