Obituary

Shirley E. Furst, age 86, of Neshannock Township, passed away the afternoon of June 7, 2018 at UPMC Jameson Hospital. Born April 28, 1932 in Wilkinsburg, PA, she was the daughter of Harry C. and Elizabeth (Beveridge) Edwards. Surviving at home is her husband of 62 years, James H. Furst, whom she married November 26, 1955. She received her Bachelors degree from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois and studied Early Childhood Education at Slippery Rock University. Shirley was the Disaster Services Director and Youth Services Director for the American Red Cross for 20 years and a pre-school teacher for Northminster weekday pre-school for 16 years. Shirley was active in several organizations throughout Lawrence County including serving as past president for the Business and Professional Women and the Womens Investment Club. She was a member of the Junior Womens Club, Jaycettes, P.E.O., Jameson Hospital Junior Guild and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She also enjoyed being with the early birds at Challenges and gardening with her husband and making hanging flower bags. She had many interests in her life including playing piano, entertaining, playing cards, walking, and cooking. She treasured the time spent with her family and attending her grandchildrens sporting events. While attending Highland Presbyterian Church, she was the Christian Education Director and former Deacon and Elder. During her time there as well as her more recent membership at Shenango Presbyterian Church, Shirley enjoyed singing in the choir and playing bells. In addition to her husband Jim, she is survived by two daughters, Barbara Ann Furst of New Castle and Linda (David) Jory of Washington, DC; one son, James E. (Kathy) Furst of New Castle; one sister, Carol Little of Libertyville, IL; and four grandchildren, Calvin Jory, Ryan Jory, Amanda Furst and Rayanna Furst. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, H. Clifford Edwards. Entombment will be in Graceland Cemetery Mausoleum. In keeping with Shirleys wishes, there will be no calling hours. A private service will be held for the family at their convenience.
