Obituary

Thomas Confer passed away on Sunday morning, April 14, 2019 in Wilmington, North Carolina after a lengthy illness. Tom was born and raised in New Castle, graduating from Neshannock High School in 1969. After receiving his bachelor's degree in finance from Youngstown State University in 1973, he moved to Florida to begin a successful career in the banking, mortgage and realty industries. Tom began his career with Coral Gables Savings & Loan as a branch manager and later a Vice President. This is where he met his future wife Terry O'Brien. He continued his education while working, receiving his masters at Florida International University. After almost 20 years with CGF, he became an independent mortgage broker, followed by employment with Fidelity Federal for 8 years. Due to a heart attack at age 50 and then a stroke at 60, Tom was faced with many challenges. His wife, Terry, was at his side until she passed away in 2014. From an early age, Tom loved the outdoors, developing a deep passion for hunting, fishing and trapping which never waned throughout his entire life. He never missed a hunting season and had many "trophies" to show for it, whether it be Pennsylvania deer, quail or wild boar. Tom Served as President of one of Quails Unlimited Florida chapters. His fishing expeditions were many. He enjoyed catching the smallest trout to a large sailfish. When he wasn't on a hunting or fishing trip in Florida, North Carolina or Mexico with friends or Terry, you would find him looking for treasures at a gun show. When Tom lost the ability to work, hunt and fish, there was a huge void in his life. Tom is survived by his sister Barbara Grieder Morton (George Morton) of Wilmington, NC, brother Robert Grieder (Lori Grieder) of Newbury Park, CA, 9 nephews and 1 niece along with several cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Terry, parents Ruth Confer Grieder Connerly and Clarence Confer, and brothers Richard and Harry Confer. Visitation will be held at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home on Saturday, May 4, from 11:00 am to 12:00, immediately followed by a service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Graceland Cemetery.
