Vera Eugenia W. Harcar was reunited with her husband, son, and other loved ones when she passed from this life into God's hands on Monday, June 5, 2017. She was surrounded by her children. She raised her family on Wallace Avenue in New Castle and later moved to Hunter's Woods in Neshannock Township. She most recently was a resident at the Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care Center in New Wilmington, PA. She was 92 years old. Eugenia was born on September 8, 1924 in Independence, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Alex and Vera Wallace Wilkerson. She married Andrew E. Harcar, Jr. on October 18, 1944 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. They were married for forty-three years, until his death in 1988. She will always be remembered by her kind, loving nature, her genuine smile and signature hugs. She was a strong Christian and held God and His teachings at the pinnacle in her life's journey. Her family was the love of her life and her devotion to them was immense. Her cooking was unsurpassed. Her home was always spotless. She enjoyed planting and tending to her flowers and doing most any yard work in general. She was an artist with a crochet hook and left her children and grandchildren afghans made by her hand. She was proudly present at most all of her children's and grandchildren's sporting events. The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Steelers were her favorite teams and she was a fan of both. She was the valedictorian of her high school graduating class and went on to continue her education at a private business school in Memphis, Tennessee. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; and her son, Dennis E. Harcar. She was one of six children. All of her siblings also predeceased her: her sisters, Betty Jean Crump, Doris Garrison, Annie Ruth "T" Tomlinson, Janie Whitten and her brother, Jack Wilkerson. Eugenia, or Jeannie, as she was known by her friends, was the secretary to the Lawrence County Juvenile Probation Officers. She started working there in December 1975 and retired on July 2, 1997. Eugenia was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church where she served many terms as both Deacon and Elder. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter Number 105. She was a past Worthy Matron and a past District Deputy to the Grand Worthy Matron for the OES in the State of Pennsylvania for District 2B. She was a member of the advisory board for the Order of the Rainbow for Girls, New Castle Assembly Number One. She was the past treasurer for the Rainbow for Girls in the State of Pennsylvania. She was a recipient of the Grand Cross of Color, awarded for service by the Order of the Rainbow for Girls. The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation honored her with the HODEGOS award, which recognizes the outstanding efforts of adult leaders of youth programs for the Masonic Youth Groups in Pennsylvania as "a leader, guide, and instructor of the inexperienced." She was a member of, and past Chaplain for Wimodausis in New Castle. She served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Shenango Presbyterian Care Center. She served as the Inspector of Elections of the Second Ward in New Castle for several years. She will be truly missed by her family; her sons, Dale A. Harcar and his wife Janet of Sharpsville, and Kenneth M. Harcar and his wife, Deborah of Neshannock Township; her daughters, Carol A. Chamberlain and her husband, Bruce, of Canfield, OH, Mary Jane Rutyna and her husband, Aldis, of Neshannock Township, Kathleen V. Harcar Bishop of Phoenix, AZ and Susan M. Harcar of Neshannock Township, widow of her son Dennis. She was blessed with twelve grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 on Thursday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Rev. Richard Kinney of Highland Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Park Cemetery.
