Verna J. Thompson, 79, of New Castle, passed away the night of December 31, 2014 in Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born May 28, 1935 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Theodore and Anna Warnock. Verna graduated as valedictorian from Eastbrook High School in 1953 and attended Westminster College. She married Arthur E. Thompson on August 31, 1956 who passed away July 26, 1991. Verna worked at Shenango Pottery until she started her family. She started working at Liberty Mutual in 1974 and retired in 1992 after 18 years of service. Verna was a member of First United Brethren Church where she was organist for many years. She also played the organ at Mount Hermon Church. Verna was a life long member of both Eastbrook and Liberty Grange. She also enjoyed genealogy and spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed reminiscing about growing up in Eastbrook and earlier times. Verna is survived by a son John D. Thompson of Volant; a daughter Barbara (Ernest) Crawford of Russell, PA; two grandchildren, Trevor Crawford and Raelyn Thompson; one brother, William Warnock of Hookstown; several nephews and nieces; and her good friend, Donna Dorsey. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Virginia Warnock, and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Thompson. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2:00-6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will take place Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home and will be officiated by Rev. David Bell of First United Brethren, and Verna's nephew, David Warnock, who is a missionary. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to either Liberty Grange #1780, 350 Blackberry Lane, New Castle, PA 16101, or First United Brethren Church, 1900 Eastbrook Road, New Castle, PA 16101.
