Obituary

Viola M. Newton, 92, of Aiken Road, passed away the morning of July 19, 2013 at Butler Memorial Hospital. Born April 8, 1921, in Sutersville, PA., she was a daughter of Charles and Mary E. Cameron Johnson. She was a graduate of Sewickly Twp. High School in Hermanie, PA. Viola was preceded in death on December 13, 1995 by her husband of 52 years, James C. Newton, whom she married April 17, 1943. Viola was a homemaker, she also worked on the election board and worked for U.S. Steel during WW II at both their Cristy Park and Ellwood City Plants. Viola was a member of Center Presbyterian Church, where she was secretary of the parents class for many years. She was a past member of TOPS #251, the Laurel Travel Club. She was a fan of the Pirates since she was 11 years old and a great Steeler fan. She also played softball in her teen years and loved to travel but most of all Viola loved her sons and all her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all her friends, brother, sisters, nieces and nephews. She is survived by her two sons, Howard J. Newton and wife Kathy of Boston Va., and Daniel A. Newton and wife Joanne of Portersville, Pa.; one brother, Charles Johnson of West Newton, PA; two sisters, Hilma Cassidy of Gaston South Carolina, and Janet Kodrin of Yukon, PA; five grandchildren, Sherry (Timothy) Jones, Vicki (Russell) Chesley and James, Daniel and Sarah Newton; six great-grandchildren, Jenna Dick, Tommy Dick, Taylor Jones, Colin Chesley, Taryn Chesley and B.J. Gartrell. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Lois and Charles Sari and Margaret and Keith Price; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Viola was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Johnson; one sister, Melva Anderson, and twin sisters that died at birth. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 22, 2013, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, July 23, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will follow at noon, Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at the funeral home and will be officiated by the Rev. Dr. James Bibza and Viola's grandson, the Rev. Timothy Jones. Burial will be in Castle View Gardens.
