Virginia A. Verterano Shanes, 71, of 318 Rhodes Place, passed away the morning of September 13, 2011 in Jameson Hospital.Born September 3, 1940, she was a daughter of Claude M. and Elizabeth E. Stewart Jenkins.Virginia was a 1958 graduate from Union High School after which she obtained her teaching degree from Slippery Rock State Teachers College.Although she had no children of her own, Virginia touched the lives of hundreds of kindergarteners throughout her teaching career in the New Wilmington School District.Virginia was known as a creative artist who loved to crochet, knit and embroider. Using the signature "Queen V", she enjoyed designing custom made greeting cards for friends and family.She is survived by her sister Kathleen (Jenkins)Pugh; her nieces, Charlene Jenkins, Janet Jenkins and Dana (Pugh) Broomes; her nephews, Douglas M. Jenkins and Alan Pugh; and former sister-in-law, Mary E. Jenkins Kerr.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband Sam Verterano and husband Gordon Shanes; and one brother, John P. Jenkins.A private memorial service will be held at a later date.Arrangements are by the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.
