Vivian J. Hammond, 83, of 9 W. Moody Ave., New Castle, passed away the morning of July 14, 2011 at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.Born Oct. 24, 1927 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Ernest and Mae Davies Crawford.She married Earl B. Hammond July 29, 1944. He survives. She attended New Castle High School. Vivian was an auditor for the controller at the Lawrence County Courthouse. She was also a switchboard operator at the Courthouse, the New Castle City Building, Shenango Pottery and the New Castle News and was an operator at Bell Telephone. Vivian loved going out to the family summer camp in Harlansburg, She played the piano and organ and was a Rainbow girl. Vivian was a member of First United Methodist Church.In addition to her husband, Vivian is survived by a son, Blaine Hammond of New Castle; one sister, Sally McCann of New Castle; one granddaughter, Hayley McCann; and nine nieces and nephews, Robert McCann, Gary, McCann, David McCann, Lynn Beichner, Marsha Sewcazk, Sandy Troxell, Patty Crawford, Ernie Crawford, Jr., and Matthew Crawford.She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ernie Crawford II.There are no calling hours.A private funeral service will be held at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. The Rev. Dennis Bupp will officate.
