Walter G. "Walt" Black, 84, of New Castle, passed away the night of November 26, 2014 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born September 20, 1930 in New Castle, he was a son of Alfred and Lula Ward Black. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Violet "June" Stallsmith Black, whom he married April 23, 1955. Walt served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the VFW Post #315. He was a carpenter with the Carpenter's Local Union No. 268. In addition to his activities of bowling, fishing, hunting, and gardening, Walt enjoyed spending his time braiding rugs, building dog and bird houses, and watching sports, especially football, baseball and hockey. He was known by his family to bake the best apple pies. He enjoyed making waffles, pancakes and homemade vegetable soup. Walt was a member of the Maitland Lane Free Methodist Church. In addition to his wife June, he is survived by two daughters, Lori Ryhal and Cathy Black, both of New Castle; two brothers, Gerald Black of New Castle, and Donald Black of Colorado; three sisters, Jean Marie McEwen, Roberta Brooks, and Janet Smoot, all of New Castle; and one grandchild, Whitney Marie Ryhal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Edward Black; four brothers, Alfred, Melvin, Merle, and Gaylord Black; and one sister, Doris Brooks. At the family's request, there will be no calling hours or service. Private burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Lawrence Co. Animal Relief, St Jude's Children's Hospital or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc.
