Walter John Gierlach, 84, of New Castle, passed away the evening of November 26, 2023, at UPMC Passavant-McCandless.

Born July 8, 1939, in New Castle, he was the son of Walter J. and Mary (Nevotne) Gierlach, Sr.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Marlene (Nocera) Gierlach, whom he married on January 9, 1960.

A 1957 graduate of New Castle High School, he continued his education at Youngstown State University. Walter was the co-owner of Unitas Industries Inc.

Walter enjoyed life to the fullest. Not only was he proud of his Polish heritage, he was proud to reside in New Castle and be a part of the New Castle community. He helped organize events in the area including the Swing Lobby reunions and Back to the 50's. Among his varied interests, he enjoyed golf and music, especially the Eagles. What was most important was the time spent with family, especially attending his grandchildren's sports events. Walter was a member of Holy Spirit Parish.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Marcie (Bill) Horn of New Castle; two sons, Walter (Debbie) J. Gierlach, III of Poland, Ohio and Kevin (Stephanie) Gierlach of New Castle; one sister, Susan G. Noviello of New Castle; and four grandchildren, Krista (Andrew) Remis, Ava Horn, Adrienne Gierlach and Kevin Gierlach.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Dorothea M. Dickens.

A private Blessing Service will be held at the convenience of the family at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home of New Castle. Burial will be in Castle View Mausoleum.
