Walter P. Kerber, Jr., age 95, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of August 17, 2020 at Edison Manor. Born May 1, 1925 in New Castle, he was the son of Walter P. Kerber, Sr. and Elizabeth (Kelley) Kerber. He was preceded in death on March 18, 2008 by his beloved wife of 61 years, Betty Lou (Trent) Kerber, whom he married February 21, 1947. Mr. Kerber served his country in the US Army during WWII as a staff sergeant and was present on D-Day as part of the Normandy Beach invasion. He was employed as a machinist supervisor with the New Castle Company until his retirement. An active member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, Walter was on the St. John's Golf League and was involved in many church activities. He enjoyed bowling and also coin collecting and was a member of the Lawrence County Numismatic Association. He is survived by one son, Phillip J. (Karen) Kerber of New Castle; one daughter, Kathy Kerber of New Castle; two grandchildren, Jennifer Kerber of North Kingsville, Ohio and Matthew Kerber of Cortland, Ohio. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Fox and Thelma Wooley. A one hour visitation will be held on Friday, August 21, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 11:00 with the Rev. David Snyder officiating. Full military rites will be performed by the New Castle Area Honor Guard. Visitors are asked to adhere to CDC guidelines regarding wearing face masks and practicing social distancing. Walter will be laid to rest beside his wife in Castle View Memorial Gardens.
