Obituary

Walter P. McKeever, age 70, of Neshannock Township, passed away on January 25, 2017 at UPMC Jameson Hospital. Born in New Castle on August 20, 1946, he was a son of Walter J. and Donna J. (Smith) McKeever. Surviving at home is his beloved wife, the former Anita Malley, whom he married on April 27, 2001. Walt was a graduate of Neshannock High School, class of 1964, the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University of Daytona Beach, Florida. He held a commercial pilot license and had been a flight instructor in New Castle and Florida. A proud veteran of the US Navy, he served as a flight engineer and was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for flying classified missions. Before retirement, he had been an executive for Rockwell International in New Castle and Troy, Michigan and for Johnson Controls in Ann Arbor, Michigan. An avid golfer, he was a volunteer golf coach for Special Olympics of Lawrence County and was instrumental in establishing their annual golf scramble. He loved golfing, flying and was a University of Michigan sports fan, "Go Blue!" In addition to his wife, Walt is survived by his mother, Donna McKeever; a son, Kevin McKeever of Chicago; a daughter, Lisa Calabria of New Castle; a stepdaughter, Christine (Adam) Johnston of New Castle; a stepson, Steve (Kim) Mills of South Carolina; three sisters, Susan Perry of Oviedo, Florida, Lori Yoho and Jodi Pionati, both of New Castle; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter J. McKeever and his best buddy and nephew, Mark Pionati. Visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 on Sunday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A blessing service will be held immediately after visitation at 3:00 on Sunday at the funeral home with Father Frank Almade officiating. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform a full military service. A memorial mass will be held at a later date at St. Vitus Church. Memorial contributions may be made in Walt's name to Special Olympics of Lawrence County, PO Box 5505, New Castle, PA 16105; to St. Vitus Church, 910 Mercer Street, New Castle, PA 16101; or to the donor's favorite charity.
