Walter S. Powell, Sr., 91, of New Castle, Pennsylvania, died Monday, August 17, 2020, at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Rock Island, Illinois.
Walter Sherman Powell was born April 3, 1929, in Eastbrook, Pennsylvania, one of eight children of Albert and Anna (Flickenger) Powell. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radar man on the destroyer, "DD 836 George K. MacKenzie". He married Ruth Ann Reider on April 23, 1955, in New Castle. She died February 6, 2006. He worked as a millwright for Sharon Steel Corporation for 35 years.
Walt was a member of the American Legion, Eagles Club, New Castle VFW Post #315, and the Moose Club. He was an honorary member of the Civil War Company I 116th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He swore by "three beers a day".
He is survived by two sons, Walter S. Powell, Jr. of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Patrick J. Powell of McAllen, Texas; six grandchildren, Nicholas, Benjamin, and Matthew Powell, Logan and Lauren Niemi, and Tyler Still; and a sister, Shirley Adams of Snow Peak, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his wife, and two children, Kathleen Niemi and Michael Powell.
A memorial service will be held on Wed. August 26th at 11:00 a.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle.
Burial will be with his wife at Castleview Memorial Gardens, New Castle, Pennsylvania.
Full military rites will be performed by the New Castle Area Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagles Club or VFW Post #315, New Castle.
