William A. Altman, 88, of New Castle, passed away the morning of September 17, 2013 at Jameson Hospital. Born October 8, 1924 in New Castle, PA, he was a son of Clyde C. and Eleanor M. Boyer Altman. Bill is survived by his wife of 68 years, Florence Rusu Altman, whom he married December 9, 1944. He retired on November 1, 1986 after 33 years with the Pennsylvania American Water Company as a pump station operator. Bill was an active member of First Church of God where he enjoyed singing duets with his wife. In addition to serving on the Board of Trustees, he maintained the church grounds, vehicles, and lawn equipment. He enjoyed camping and playing the guitar and, in years past, he liked to water ski. In addition to his wife Florence, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie L. and William DePaola of Blue Ridge, GA; a son and daughter-in-law, Samuel D. and Sally Altman of Manassas, VA; a sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Richard Ward of New Castle; 4 grandchildren, Amanda Travis, Samuel D. Altman, Jr., Stacey D. Burroughs, and Scott D. Altman; and 3 great grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, April L. Altman; and one brother, Clyde C. Altman, Jr. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 20, 2013, from 6:00-8:00 p.m at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle. A service will take place immediately following visitation Friday, September 20, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and will be officiated by Rev. William Hunley. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 18th St. N.W., Washington, DC 20006.
