Obituary

William John Getchy, age 83, of Neshannock Township, passed away the morning of July 8, 2016 at his residence. Born October 13, 1932 in New Castle, PA, he was the son of John and Emily Getchy. Surviving at home is his wife of nearly 57 years, Eleanore Flowers Getchy, whom he married on August 22, 1959. Bill attended Shenango schools, lettering in three sports – baseball, basketball and football. He also played baseball for the American Legion team during the summer. After his graduation from Shenango High School in 1950 he enlisted in the Air Force where he was assigned to electronics school. Upon completion of his training, Bill played baseball for the Special Forces and also coached basketball. Bill attended the University of Illinois and completed his engineering degree at Youngstown State University. He was recruited by Dow Chemical as an engineer and became district manager for the Youngstown office. Along with the managerial responsibilities, he also trained technicians and engineers. They used to say they graduated from G.I.T. – Getchy's Institute of Technology. Bill also designed and engineered a special piece of equipment used in industrial cleaning. He was Presbyterian and a member of the New Castle Country Club and numerous professional organizations. He enjoyed golf, trips to Ohio State and Notre Dame. He always was helping people and wanted to see people develop to their fullest. He was especially fond of the Wilmington Area 'Class of 64' and enjoyed attending their events. In addition to his parents and his in-laws, Bert and Margaret Flowers, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Frank Hudak, Mrs. Gil Ward and Mrs. George Hockenberry. Those left to mourn in addition to his wife are his "adopted kids" – Drs. Adele and Alyce Marcotuli, Marilou Allen, and Arnie Vance. Also surviving is his niece, Gail Stahura of Westerville, Ohio; nephews, Rusty (Cheri) Ward of Bloomfield Hills, MI, Jarvis (Nanda) Ward of Louisville, KY; grand-nephews Tyler Ward and Dr. Joshua Ward. Also surviving are Christine White, nieces Debbie Troy and Kiley Troy of Skyview Farms, Mercer, PA and nephew Dr. Jarrod Troy of East Lansing, MI. A special thank you to Dr. Yumang, Anne Brenneman, and his caregivers. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Andrew Jillson officiating. Burial will be in Castle View Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be offered at www.cunninghamfh.com
