William M. Harlan, 72, of 3301 Shaffer Road, Ellwood City, passed away the afternoon of Jan. 28, 2010, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh.Born Oct. 19, 1937, in New Castle, he was the son of Elmer F. and Ada Marie Shaffer Harlan. His father survives in New Castle.He married Mary Jane Brown Aug. 15, 1959. She survives at their home in Ellwood City.William attended Princeton School and then served in the U. S. Army as a private first class in the Signal Corps from 1955 to 1956.He was employed as a truck driver with Cranberry Supply for 14 years. He previously worked as a certified welder and machinist for Pennsylvania Engineering in New Castle. Prior to that, he worked for the former Matthews Conveyors in Ellwood City.William enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and camping.In addition to his father and wife, survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra J. and Rick Douglas of Beaver Falls, and Kathy E. Lance of New Castle; a son and daughter-in-law, William F. and Lisa Harlan of Carson, Va.; two brothers, John Harlan and Howard Harlan, both of New Castle; three sisters, Eleanor Frazier of New Castle, Thelma Domblisky of Gilbert, Ariz., and Margaret Walters of Mercer; seven grandchildren, Amanda Falen, Michael Lance, Christopher Falen, William A. Harlan, Stephanie Schroepfer, Melinda Rogriduez and Rebecca Lance; and three great grandchildren, Aahleyah Foster, Halie Foster and Tyler Rogriduez. He was preceded in death by his mother; and two brothers, Richard Harlan and Thomas Harlan.Visitation is 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at the funeral home. The Rev. Brian Hammond of Faith Country Chapel will officiate.Burial will be in Mount Hermon Cemetery.Online condolences may be posted below.
