William E. "Bill" Mitchell, age 83, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of December 30, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Born in New Castle on July 21, 1933, he was the son of Lawrence and Julia E. Withrow Mitchell. He was preceded in death on September 19, 2009 by his wife of 59 years, Betty Jane Wyman Mitchell, whom he married August 30, 1957. Bill was a New Castle High School graduate, and served his country during the Korean Conflict as a Sergeant in the Air Force. He was the assistant vice-president of Mellon Bank until his retirement. Bill served as past president of Kiwanis and enjoyed golf and yard work. He was a former member of Second U.P. Church where he served as an Elder and trustee. He is survived by three daughters, Penny Langstrand of Texas, Billiejean Jaudan of South Carolina and Susan Ross of New Castle; four sons, Richard Brooks of New Wilmington, Charles Brooks of Michigan, Edwin Mitchell of Texas and Dennis Mitchell of West Virginia; two brothers, Carl Mitchell and Lawrence Mitchell both of New Castle; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Strayer. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 12:00-2:00 PM at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 2:00 PM at the funeral home with the Rev.
