William John Pommersheim died peacefully on February 2nd, 2025. It was Groundhogs Day, a fitting Pennsylvania holiday for a quintessential Pennsylvania man.

William was born in Murrysville, PA November 12,1933 to John Martin Pommersheim and Marian Louise Hall Pommersheim. He was the oldest of 3 children and is survived by his brother James Pommersheim, his 3 children, William Pommersheim, Susan Worley and Ann Gaine, 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.

He attended Franklin Township High School, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and graduated in 1958. He interned at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh and later served with the US Army Medical corps. William, (Bill), practiced urology in New Castle, PA for 35 years. It was a career he was proud of. He is a past president of the Jameson Memorial Hospital, the St. Francis Hospital, and the Lawrence County Medical Society.

At the age of 25 he met and married Margaret Mary Ann Schoos of Pittsburgh. She was studying nursing at the University of Pittsburgh when they met. She caught and held his eye for over 61 years until she passed in 2019. Margaret was the love of his life. The two of them enjoyed a very happy marriage, made many friends, traveled the world and never tired of their life together.

Bill was a man of many hobbies and talents. He was an avid hunter throughout his life and whether it be ridding farmers of groundhogs in the field or traveling to the Yukon to hunt large sheep and moose, he loved it all. Even in the later years, he could often be found in tree stands or camo blinds tucked back in the woods on his property. In those years it would be difficult to parse how much time was spent intent on the hunt versus the minutes he spent listening to the wind in the leaves.

Bill was a skilled woodworker who made furniture, hobbyhorses for his grandchildren and clocks, large and small. He once built a 30" replica of the USS Constitution complete with tiny rigging that sat in a glass case on the hi-fi for years. Oh, and he'd made the hi-fi. He ran a successful apple orchard on his property for 20 years. He grew many types of apples, pressed cider, kept bees and pruned the trees whose limbs he'd set ablaze along with leaves and other combustibles. The local authorities were summoned more than once. Bill rarely sat still, but if he did it was often behind the wheel of his car, tooling the back roads of Western PA. He loved dogs.

There will be a private ceremony to mark his passing. We hope that any friends or acquaintances pause to wish him well on his journey ahead.
