Obituary

Wilma H. Belknap, formerly a resident of New Castle, passed away on November 26, 2011 in Fayetteville, PA at the age of 93.Wilma was born to Samuel and Mary Elizabeth Shaffer of Princeton on September 20, 1918.Wilma graduated from Princeton High School in 1935 at sixteen. Later she went to work in New Castle at People's Drug Store. Willard L. (Bill) Belknap worked across the street at Isaly's and the two met on a blind date on New Year's Eve. They were married for 31 years until Bill passed away in 1968.Together Bill and Wilma owned and operated Isaly's on Highland Avenue for 27 years. Upon Bill's passing, Wilma operated the store for another three years, selling the store to become Executive Director of the New Castle YWCA, serving for 10 years before retiring in 1980.Wilma was very active in the community. She was a fifty year member of the Jameson Hospital Junior Guild, serving as treasurer, president and past president. She also served on the boards of the Red Cross, YWCA, Almira Home, Blind Association, Historical Society, and the McGill Community Center. She was honored several times for her contributions to the community.A long time member of the Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church, she served as a Deacon, Trustee, and member of the Session. She was a member of the Irvin Bible Class and one of the founders of the Prime Timers, serving as a leader of the group for 20 years. She took members on numerous trips, both in the area and many other countries.Wilma was one of nine children and is survived by two brothers, David and Donald Shaffer of the Mercer Area; her two children, Bill and Linda, Bill and Donna Belknap reside in Moscow, Idaho and Linda and Jack Lenz in Fayetteville, PA. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.Wilma elected to be cremated and will be laid to rest next to her husband in Graceland Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Clen-Moore Church at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 6, 2012.Wilma; congratulations on a life well lived. May you rest in peace.Arrangements are by the R.
