Zena Samuels, 87, formerly of New Castle, passed away the morning of Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Youngstown, Ohio.Born March 15, 1927 in Southend-on-Sea, England, she was a daughter of Joseph and Rachel Rae Singer.She was preceded in death on May 1, 1995 by her husband of 48 years, Sherman Samuels, whom she married June 16, 1946.Zena helped in running the family footwear business, I Samuels and Sons, Inc. of New Castle.A member of Temple Hadar Israel, Zena was very active in the Jewish community including the National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, State of Israel Bonds, B'Nai B'Rith (Nathan J. Love Lodge #609), Tifereth Israel Sisterhood, Tifereth Israel Board of Directors and the United Jewish Appeal. She enjoyed being active in the arts, music and plays.She is survived by two sons, Alan Samuels of New Castle, and Neal Samuels and his wife Debra Weiner of Pittsburgh; one daughter, Carol Castiel of Washington, DC; one brother, Geoffrey Singer of Leigh-on-Sea, England; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.In addition to her parents and her husband Sherman, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Kirsch in 2012.Visitation will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A funeral service will immediately follow visitation Monday, July 21, 2014, at noon at the funeral home and will be officiated by Rabbi Franklin W. Muller Rodef Shalom. Burial will be in Tifereth Israel Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Hadar Israel, 403 E.
